July 26 – 29, 2018

2018 VICTORIA FLAMENCO FESTIVALExperience southern Spain at the 6th Annual Victoria Flamenco Festival on July 26-29 where artists from across North America perform bold and haunting rhythms through dance, song, guitar, and percussion.

Enjoy FREE shows in Centennial Square and buy tickets for several evening events. The Victoria Flamenco Festival is hosted by the Flamenco de la Isla Society.

On Thursday July 26, Flamenco Guitar Night features three of Victoria’s virtuoso guitar soloists, Gareth Owen, Juan de Marias, Jake Lee, alongside guest guitarist Josue Tacoronte from México, and singer Jafelin Helten of Vancouver. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. at Hermann’s Jazz Club.

On Friday July 27, Dark Sounds features a reading by visionary poet Jan Zwicky, whose poems, like flamenco, attend the darkest, clearest truths. She will read from recent work and perform a suite of poems with flamenco artists, to be followed by an on-stage interview. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at Intrepid Theatre on Blanshard.

On Saturday July 28, Vancouver’s flamenco troupe Calle Verde performs their show liminal, which explores that space between waking and dreaming, in collaboration with guest artist Pájaro Negro, an award-winning dancer from New York City. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. at Metro Studio Theatre.

Flamenco artists from across North America will perform FREE shows in Centennial Square from 12:00 – 1:00 on Friday, and approximately 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. So bring a hat, a bottle of sunscreen, and your heartiest jaleos to applaud these inspired performers!
