On Friday, November 8th, the Sidney Museum will screen Island of Shadows: D’Arcy Island Leper Colony, 1891-1924.

In the late 19th century, the federal government selected D’Arcy Island as the ideal location to displace and contain Canadians, primarily of Chinese descent, afflicted with leprosy This documentary examines the harsh conditions experienced by the 49 men who were forced to live there. Additionally, the film’s director/producer will be joining us virtually for a Q&A.

In the Displacing Differences display, the Sidney Museum explored the history of the penitentiary on Piers Island which in the 1930s was the site of incarceration of several hundred Sons of Freedom Doukhobors. Come see My Doukhobor Cousins on Thursday, November 21st, a documentary that looks at one family’s history who were affected by related harsh government policies.
