Voices in Motion Choir (ViM) presents the world premiere of Hornby Night, a new choral work by ViM chorister Margot Johnston conducted by Music Director Amy Van Wensem. The performance is part of ViM’s spring concert entitled Stories Worth Telling that will take place on Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 14, 2:30pm.
Founded in 2017, Voices in Motion is an intergenerational choir that invites people with memory loss, caregivers, high school students, and community members to engage in the joy of singing, make new friends in a safe and supportive environment, and present public performances. Entitled Stories Worth Telling, ViM’s end-of-season concert is a program of music that celebrates the singers’ achievements inspiring hope that one can live well despite the challenges of dementia.
Amy Van Wensem, ViM’s Music Director is passionate about the power of music. “Choral singing allows our members to transcend limitations and actively participate countering social stereotypes every time they perform. They are demonstrating their incredible capabilities as they learn and master new pieces every week. Introducing new works such as Hornby Night is proof that folks with memory loss can continue to bring beauty and joy into their own lives and others’.
ViM chorister Margot Johnston was inspired to compose Hornby Night after spending a magical evening of stargazing on Hornby Island. “I wanted to capture the incredible awe I felt on that star-filled night so I wrote Hornby Night as a poem and later put it to music. It seemed like a good fit for Voices In Motion so I arranged it for the choir. It’s been a wonderful feeling to be involved in the transformation of that special night into song. I am so fortunate that Amy and the choir have embraced my Hornby experience and brought it to life.”
The aim of the Voices in Motion choir is to foster joy, well-being, purpose, community and an understanding of dementia in society. The public is invited to learn more about their unique story at ViM’s Stories Worth Telling spring concert on May 14th.
