Victoria is home to a LOT of art galleries – traditional, modern, avant garde and native.  Here are some worth checking out!

1.  Art Gallery of Greater Victoria – 1040 Moss St., Victoria, BC

When it first opened in 1951, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria exhibited art in the historic 1889 mansion that is now adjacent to its seven modern galleries. With almost 18,000 works of art, the Art Gallery has the largest public collection in BC and is a vibrant and active part of Victoria’s artist community.
Today the Mansion houses The Gallery Shop and Art Rental & Sales as well as administrative offices on the 2nd floor. The Gallery Shop features handmade pottery, jewelry, scarves and other beautiful crafts by local artisans. Through Art Rental & Sales, individuals or businesses can purchase art or rent it for a low monthly fee. This program represents and financially supports artists in the community, while helping to raise funds for the Gallery. The Mansion can also be rented for meetings, weddings or special occasions. In the summer of 2004, the heritage mansion was repainted to reflect the original Queen Anne style colours.

contemporary, historical and local Canadian, European and International paintings.The Gallery opened in 1974, and has been under the ownership of Gunter H.J. Heinrich and Anthony R.H. Sam since 1994. The main gallery is located at 2260 Oak Bay Avenue, a five-minute drive from downtown Victoria. In June 1998, Winchester opened its second location at 1010 Broad Street (between Fort Street and Broughton Street) which moved to a new larger space located at 758 Humboldt Street in July 2010.Each gallery runs major exhibitions for a period of two to three weeks. Winchester Galleries offers a wide diversity of original Canadian art both past and present to an expanding clientele of discriminating investors and collectors.

Madrona Gallery is an historic and contemporary fine art gallery serving the community of Victoria and the surrounding area. The Gallery showcases art from both established and emerging Canadian artists to local and international visitors to Victoria. 5.   The Robert Bateman Centre – 470 Belleville St., Victoria, BC

Through our collections, research, exhibits, and programming we encourage experiential learning, observation and dialogue, and inspire people of all ages to find their place in Nature.

Located in the Steamship Terminal on Victoria’s Inner Harbour, the Centre displays the definitive collection of Robert Bateman’s work, which is used to support a dynamic program of public events.

Since he was a boy growing up in Toronto, Ontario, Robert Bateman has painted, sketched, and sculpted the particularities of the natural world. This display shows the major themes of his life’s work, including his early experimentation with abstract art styles, his travels throughout the world, and his commentary on the state of our planet. The paintings, drawings, sculptures, etchings, and lithographs are a refreshing and inspiring view of our natural and man-made heritage.

6.  The West End Gallery – 1203 Broad St., Victoria, BC

From the outset, the gallery has striven to showcase the works of leading Canadian artists, including painters and glass artists.

The gallery has an impressive stable of renowned, contemporary Canadian artists – many internationally recognized and considered important additions to any serious collectors acquisitions. Our artists range from high realism to still life, figurative to landscape to abstract. West End Gallery plays host to an educated and discerning clientele, hosting two monthly solo exhibitions of artists for veterans and new-comers to the Canadian art scene.

7.  The Alcheringa Gallery – 621 Fort St., Victoria, BC

Alcheringa is an Aboriginal Australian word for the Dreamtime, the mythical time of Alcheringa Gallerycreation, when the world and all living creatures were sung into existence. It is believed that singing and dancing maintain the state of the landscape, and that these invisible songlines hold the earth together.

The mandate of the gallery is to create a following for the work of individual aboriginal artists from three areas of the Pacific, the Northwest Coast of Canada, Papua New Guinea, and Australia, in the fine art market in Canada and abroad. Find out more about these specific areas that we cover:

In particular we recognize and promote the work of master carvers living in small villages in remote communities in the South Pacific. Alcheringa reimburses artists at a level that allows them to maintain their position as artists within their communities, and to cover their medical expenses and school fees.
